Pro Wrestling in India: From Mud Pits to the Arena
Pro wrestling in India isn’t just a borrowed tradition—it’s deeply ingrained in our heritage. It all began in the akhadas, where legends like Gama Pehlwan dominated the mud pits, displaying India’s unmatched strength to the world. Dara Singh then emerged as an icon, blending Indian grit with global showmanship long before WWE or WWF became household names. Tiger Joginder Singh and Arjan Singh Das were trailblazers in their own right, becoming two of India’s most successful professional wrestlers during the 1940s and 1950s. They worked with top wrestling promotions across Singapore, Japan, and the USA, elevating India's presence on the global wrestling stage. In 1948, both Tiger Joginder and Arjan Singh Das were signed by Great World’s wrestling promoters, where they faced off against some of the world’s best, including King Kong, Bill Verna, George Zbisko, Tiger Ray Holden, and Seelie Samara. Their skill, endurance, and unmatched prowess earned them international fame, making them symbols of India’s dominance in pro wrestling.
This clear distinction between India’s deep-rooted tradition of amateur wrestling and our success on the global stage of professional wrestling is what sets our wrestling culture apart.
Fast forward to the 90’s—WWE invades Indian TV, and suddenly, The Undertaker and Stone Cold are household names. But we didn’t stop there. The Great Khali stormed onto the global stage rising from the ashes to claim India’s place in the pro wrestling universe. However, Indian wrestlers in WWE have often struggled to receive the recognition, support, and opportunities they deserve. Despite the large and passionate fanbase in India, Indian wrestlers are given stereotypical or gimmick-based roles, limiting their potential and impact in the promotion. This lack of serious representation not only undermines the talent of Indian wrestlers but also leaves Indian fans without a local hero who truly represents their culture and abilities in the global wrestling arena.
